A collaborative team of U.S., Canadian, and German researchers has discovered manikomycin, a novel peptide antibiotic derived from the soil bacterium *Streptomyces rimosus*, the same source that yielded oxytetracycline in the 1950s. This new antibiotic has demonstrated efficacy against antibiotic-resistant strains of pneumonia, specifically *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, and also shows effectiveness against *E. coli*. Manikomycin's significance lies in its unique mechanism of action: it targets a previously unexploited site on bacterial ribosomes, disrupting protein synthesis and preventing essential molecules from exiting these organelles. This novel approach may hinder bacteria's ability to develop resistance. However, challenges remain, including the antibiotic's rapid metabolism in the body, which limits its effectiveness in animal or human trials and requires further improvement before clinical application.
