New building safety framework aims to strengthen construction oversight in South Africa 03.07.2026

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson launched the National Built Environment and Construction Safety Framework at the second Public Works and Infrastructure Summit in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, on Friday. The framework aims to prevent future building collapses and restore confidence in South Africa's infrastructure system. Macpherson stated that recent tragedies, including the George building collapse that claimed 34 lives, have exposed serious weaknesses in construction oversight, regulatory enforcement, and professional accountability. He emphasized that investigations into the Redcliffe and Ormonde building collapses have been completed, with findings to be released soon and used as instruments of accountability and reform.
