New microplastics research examines River Thames 15.06.2026

BBC

Researchers at the University of East London (UEL) have initiated a new study focusing on microplastic pollution within the River Thames, aiming to inform environmental policy and improve water quality. The project, led by Dr. Ria Devereux, will collect water samples from various points along the river, from Teddington to Southend-on-Sea. These samples will be analyzed under a microscope and via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to identify and quantify plastic particles, assessing pollution trends and the impact of climate pressures. Previous findings have indicated high microplastic levels in the Thames. This research will involve collecting three liters of surface water from seven locations, processing it in a lab, and then producing policy briefings and a stakeholder workshop to share findings with regulators and environmental organizations. The study will also investigate how storm activity influences microplastic distribution.
