New SNAP work rules are in effect. What you should know 04.06.2026

New work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are now in effect for many non-disabled adults without dependents, following legislation passed in July 2025. These rules expand eligibility limitations for receiving benefits beyond three months within a three-year period, impacting individuals aged 18-65 who do not have a dependent child under 14, and are not otherwise exempt (such as veterans, former foster youth, or the unhoused). To continue receiving SNAP, eligible individuals must meet specific work criteria, including working at least 20 hours per week, participating in approved education or training programs, or performing unpaid work or community service for a set number of hours, which vary by state and are calculated based on benefit amount and minimum wage. These changes, part of a bill that also enacted significant funding cuts, aim to curb perceived "fraud and waste," though critics argue they weaken the social safety net. Several states, including New York and California, had a June 1 deadline to implement these stipulations.
