New York City freezes rents for one million apartments in Mayor Mamdani victory 26.06.2026

The New York City Rent Guidelines Board voted 7-1 on June 25 to freeze rents for approximately one million rent-stabilized apartments, setting zero increases on both one-year and two-year leases starting October. The vote fulfilled a central campaign promise of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office in January and appointed six of the board's nine members. Hundreds of tenants packed a Manhattan museum auditorium, cheering and blowing whistles as the result was announced. Mamdani called it "a historic victory for New York City tenants."
