NHS app to use AI to determine which service best for patients 04.07.2026

NHS England has announced a major technological overhaul involving the integration of artificial intelligence into the NHS app to improve patient triage. This new tool will utilize a series of patient questions to direct individuals to appropriate services, such as GP appointments, pharmacies, A&E, or self-care advice. The rollout aims to reach 200,000 patients within the next 12 months, with full availability for all app users expected by April 2028. This initiative is supported by a £10bn government investment allocated in 2025 for digital and data systems. Additionally, AI-driven transcription tools will be expanded to assist clinicians with real-time clinical summaries. While health bodies and experts have welcomed the potential to reduce administrative burdens and improve care efficiency, they emphasized the critical need to prioritize patient safety, data confidentiality, and the prevention of digital exclusion.
