Niedersachsen Vogelgrippe im Vogelpark Walsrode ausgebrochen 20.02.2026

Avian influenza has been confirmed at the Vogelpark Walsrode in Niedersachsen, with all tested birds returning positive results for the highly aggressive virus. Veterinarian Thomas Krull stated that allowing the birds to live was not an option due to the rapid spread among seabirds. A total of 58 birds tested positive, with 10 already euthanized and the remaining 48 scheduled for culling. Fortunately, two birds from the immediate vicinity of the affected aviary tested negative, offering hope that the infection has not spread further. The outbreak was initially detected after five ducks and geese died suddenly, with the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirming the findings. The affected animals were housed in a separate outdoor seabird enclosure, likely infected by droppings from migratory birds. While other birds in closed aviaries remain unaffected, the park will be closed to visitors for 14 days.
