Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka condemned the shooting of peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos, where over nine were killed and several injured on Tuesday night after security operatives opened fire at the Lekki Toll Gate. In a Wednesday statement, Soyinka accused the Nigerian Government of authoritarian actions by deploying armed soldiers against protesters, stating the army has replaced SARS in the "demonic album." He noted the Lagos governor did not invite the army, yet the central government acted unilaterally, inflicting a "near incurable wound on the community psyche." Soyinka also referenced encountering roadblocks in Abeokuta and criticized the government's handling of COVID-19, suggesting lives are easier targets than the virus.
