Nigerian Assembly Plans Visit to South African Parliament Over Xenophobic Attacks 05.05.2026

The Nigerian National Assembly, comprising the Senate and House of Representatives, has formed a joint ad hoc committee to investigate escalating xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. Led by the National Assembly Chairman, the delegation will conduct a fact-finding and diplomatic visit to South Africa, including meetings with the South African Parliament to formally express Nigeria's strong displeasure. The Senate resolved to write to the South African Parliament Speaker and invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs for briefings, while also reviewing unresolved resolutions from a 2019 Nigeria-South Africa bilateral meeting. These actions follow a motion by Senator Aniekan Bassey, sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso, highlighting urgent national, diplomatic, and humanitarian responses. Senator Adams Oshiomhole called for economic retaliation against South African businesses like MTN and Multichoice, but Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized diplomatic solutions, and the Senate observed a minute of silence for victims.
