Nigerian Court Declares N110Billion National Assembly Vehicle, Allowance Scheme Unlawful, Violates Procurement Act 07.06.2026

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled the Nigerian National Assembly's N110 billion expenditure on vehicles and allowances for lawmakers unlawful, finding it violated procurement laws, constitutional provisions, and public accountability principles. Delivered on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, by Justice Yellim Bogoro in a suit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), the judgment found that the N40 billion spent on 465 vehicles and the N70 billion allocated as support allowances lacked due process, transparency, and value for money. The court stated the arrangement constituted self-dealing and conflict of interest, as lawmakers approved funds from which they directly benefited. Justice Bogoro emphasized that public office is a trust and that legislative autonomy does not shield illegality, directing Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to ensure future spending adheres to strict accountability measures amidst national economic hardship.
