Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified on Monday that the state government's Marathi language requirement for autorickshaw and taxi drivers is intended only to ensure basic communication, not to make Hindi-speaking drivers "experts" in the language. He emphasized that the Mahayuti administration would not tolerate any language-based injustice and that drivers would be given additional time if needed to acquire functional Marathi knowledge. "There is no reason to make them experts in Marathi. They should know work-related, basic Marathi," Fadnavis stated, adding that no licenses had been canceled so far.
