Nieuwe bedrijven in de noordoostpolder kunnen niet meer rekenen op wateraansluiting 23.02.2026

Vitens, the water company serving the northern part of Flevoland, is unable to meet the growing demand for water from new and expanding businesses in the Noordoostpolder and Urk. This capacity issue, exacerbated by factors like population growth and climate change-induced droughts, has been ongoing since 2023. Consequently, businesses requiring new or increased water connections must now find their own solutions for both water supply and wastewater disposal, as Vitens' legal obligation to supply water only extends to residential needs. Despite investigations into alternative sources like surface water and inter-provincial transport, no viable long-term solutions have been found to guarantee sufficient water for businesses within the next decade. The province aims to present a concrete plan for collaboration with businesses on water system solutions by the summer of 2026.
