King Haakon VIII of Norway took a formal oath before Parliament on September 1, pledging to govern in accordance with the Constitution and laws, a symbolic act that underscores the monarchy's ceremonial role. The 53-year-old monarch became king after his father, King Harald V, died on August 28 at age 89. During the ceremony in Oslo's Parliament chamber, Haakon recited, "I promise and swear that I will govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its Constitution and Laws, so help me God, the almighty and omniscient."
