'Not appropriate': Australia hits out at China as New Zealand MPs banned 04.06.2026

Australia has expressed its disapproval of China's decision to ban four New Zealand politicians who recently visited Taiwan. The banned New Zealand MPs, from the National, Labour, NZ First, and ACT parties, were part of a regular inter-parliamentary program visiting Taiwan in early May. New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, stated that such visits are consistent with the One China policy and that the travel ban marks a departure from past practice. Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Penny Wong, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that parliamentarians should be free to decide their travel independently and that pressuring them is inappropriate. Wong confirmed that Australian MPs have also travelled to Taiwan without facing similar sanctions. The development comes as New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss regional security.
