NSRS unanimously adopted controversial declaration, with support from the opposition as well 07.07.2026

The National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration on the Protection of the Vital National Interests of the Serbian People in BiH, proposed by Nenad Stevandić, at its 40th extraordinary session. The document was adopted unanimously with 56 votes, with support from the opposition. The declaration contains controversial formulations, referring to RS as a "state" and describing the war as a "tragic civil conflict." Key objectives include defending RS's competencies against unitarization, the return of Dayton competencies, the protection of RS property and cultural-historical heritage, and strengthening cooperation with the Republic of Serbia. The document also calls for the termination of the mandate of the OHR and the High Representative. Meanwhile, the Office of the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Bećirović, stated that the NSRS lacks constitutional competence for certain decisions and announced a challenge against attempts to usurp the competencies of state institutions before the Constitutional Court of BiH.
