America gets supersized as obesity rates spike in both children and adults 07.07.2026

A new study from the American Heart Association reveals a significant surge in obesity rates across the United States between 1999 and 2023. Data from nearly 8,700 individuals shows that obesity prevalence rose from 30 percent to 41 percent, while abdominal obesity increased from 48 percent to 61 percent. The research highlights alarming trends among youth, including a three-fold increase in abdominal obesity. Experts attribute these rising rates to sedentary lifestyles, diets dominated by ultraprocessed foods, and social determinants like limited access to nutritious food and healthcare. While the emergence of GLP-1 weight loss drugs offers new mitigation possibilities, researchers note that current BMI measurements may underestimate the true burden. Addressing the environmental and social conditions that drive obesity remains critical for public health initiatives to reverse these dangerous long-term trends.
