Old Colonial Tax Laws Kept Nigerians Poor, New Reforms Will Drive Prosperity, Says Tinubu 16h ago

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated in Abuja on Tuesday that archaic colonial-era tax laws were a primary contributor to Nigeria's poverty, asserting that his administration's new tax reforms are designed to foster economic prosperity, inclusivity, and opportunity. Speaking at the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) headquarters, Tinubu explained that the previous fragmented and inconsistent tax regime hindered economic growth and public trust. The new laws, fully operational since January, aim to make Nigeria more globally competitive by liberating the economy from outdated regulations, with early results showing improvements in fiscal stability and investor confidence. The reforms, he emphasized, are not about increasing tax burdens but about establishing a fair, transparent system that rewards enterprise and supports growth.
