On Lithuania’s border, Europe is chipping away at refugee rights 07.09.2026

Since the summer of 2021, people entering the EU from Belarus have been routinely subjected to pushbacks, a practice that continues today. A four-meter-high fence topped with razor wire now runs the entire 1,250-kilometer border between the EU and Belarus, from Latvia to Poland. The restricted zone extends up to five kilometers wide in Lithuania, and no journalists or aid organizations are allowed near the fence without a permit, facing fines if they defy the ban.
