Opposition Activist Acquitted, Freed After 7 Months 08.06.2026

On June 3, 2026, a Harare court acquitted and released opposition activist Godfrey Chidhau Karembera, 47, known as "Madzibaba Veshanduko," after over seven months of detention on charges of inciting public violence. Karembera, arrested on October 20, 2025, was accused of distributing fliers for a protest against President Emmerson Mnangagwa's administration and a constitutional amendment. He was allegedly severely beaten after his arrest and repeatedly denied bail, a situation Human Rights Watch attributes to the government's weaponization of the criminal justice system against critics. His case highlights a pattern of alleged misuse of the justice system to target opposition figures, activists, and journalists in Zimbabwe.
