Opposition announces investigative commission following ruling against Steinert: "We need the Government to respond" 07.07.2026

Various opposition benches in Chile, including Frente Amplio, the Communist Party, and the Christian Democracy Party, announced the creation of a Special Investigative Commission following the Comptroller General's ruling against former Public Security Minister Trinidad Steinert. The Comptroller General determined that Steinert exceeded her legal powers by requesting reserved information from the Investigative Police (PDI) related to organized crime cases. Deputy Tatiana Urrutia led the announcement, stating that the objective is to hold the Government accountable for the former minister's management and the protection of the police forces. Although the priority is the commission, the opposition does not rule out filing a constitutional accusation if serious evidence emerges. For her part, Steinert has requested a reconsideration of the ruling, alleging legal errors in the administrative process.
