Opposition Unification: PS and Democrats Heading Toward Coalition, KDH Haunted by Trauma, SaS Learns Its Lesson Again 07.07.2026

During the summer break, opposition parties in Slovakia are conducting intensive negotiations to form pre-election alliances to face upcoming parliamentary elections and prevent the fragmentation of votes. The main actor is Progressive Slovakia (PS), led by Michal Šimečka, which is engaged in the most intense talks with the extra-parliamentary party Democrats, with a result expected by the end of summer. Other scenarios being considered include a coalition of the Democrats, KDH, and the Hungarian Alliance, although KDH has publicly declared an independent approach. In contrast, SaS plans to run in the elections independently, despite internal calls for unification. A significant factor is the experience from 2020, when unsuccessful coalition negotiations between PS-Spolu and Za ľudí led to political instability. Current negotiations are complicated by disputes over the allocation of seats on candidate lists and the negative result of the Democrats' recent referendum.
