“Orban-Gate” investigation fundraiser takes off two weeks before Hungary elections 9h ago

A fundraiser for a former Hungarian police investigator, Bence Szabo, who claims to have uncovered a covert operation by the domestic intelligence service targeting Prime Minister Viktor Orban's opposition, has rapidly gained support, exceeding 500,000 euros in donations within a day. The allegations, dubbed "Orban-gate" by opposition leader Peter Magyar, suggest the intelligence service attempted to infiltrate the IT systems of Magyar's TISZA party since at least 2025. Szabo made these claims in a viral video, alleging superiors blocked his investigation and that he was subsequently terminated and accused of abuse of office after resigning and sharing information with investigative outlet Direkt36. The government has acknowledged a covert operation but stated it predated TISZA and targeted "Ukrainian spies." This scandal emerges just two weeks before the April 12 elections, where Orban faces a significant challenge from Magyar's TISZA party.
