Osteoarthritis and Arthritis: Professional Society Recommends "Movement Snacks" 08.06.2026

The European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) has updated its recommendations for physical activity for people with inflammatory arthritis or osteoarthritis. Instead of long training sessions, short "movement snacks" lasting a few seconds to minutes, distributed throughout the day, are now recommended, such as climbing stairs or doing squats. This innovation aligns with the WHO's 2020 guidelines, which abandoned the minimum duration of ten minutes per activity unit. Every movement now counts, and long periods of sitting should be regularly interrupted, as short movement units offer health benefits. The professional society considers physical activity a firm component of therapy and recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate or 75 to 150 minutes of intensive exercise per week, supplemented by strength, flexibility, and balance exercises. Studies show that regular exercise does not worsen symptoms but reduces disease activity and improves quality of life, with modern technologies such as fitness trackers being used as support.
