Ostsee-Insel bröckelt: Spaziergängern poltern Steine am Strand entgegen – Behörde warnt vor Phänomen 18.02.2026

Cliff collapses are occurring on the Baltic Sea coast of Rügen, with stones falling onto the beach, prompting warnings for tourists and walkers. The phenomenon, observed in Sellin, is linked to weather conditions, particularly the thawing of frozen earth layers. As temperatures rise, melting water from inland flows towards the coast, potentially dislodging material from the cliffs, which can be up to 117 meters high. Karsten Schütze from the State Office for Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology (Lung) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern advises maintaining distance from the cliff base, watching for water seeps and falling stones, and staying on designated paths above the cliffs. The risk of further collapses is heightened by thawing weather and could be exacerbated by storm surges, which are known triggers for such events.
