Our View: Is Cyprus doing enough to fight gender-based violence? 07.07.2026

During a House human rights committee meeting, Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis revealed that 18,409 cases of violence against women were reported in Cyprus between 2021 and June 2026. This discussion follows recent high-profile incidents, including a policeman shooting his wife and a separate attack on a mother and daughter. Statistics show 17 femicides occurred between 2020 and 2025, alongside 3,674 arrests and 2,858 restriction orders. While the state has implemented measures like a justice ministry prevention body, specialized training for public servants, and a 24-hour helpline, questions remain regarding judicial effectiveness. Critics argue that arrest numbers do not reflect actual sentencing outcomes or the quality of police sensitivity. While organizations like Spavo provide vital support, the core issue remains whether the police and courts are doing enough to ensure justice and reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence.
