Out-of-court tax settlement brings €1.5 million case to an end 09.04.2026

Criminal proceedings against accountants Nigel and Mikaela Scerri and associated companies have concluded following an out-of-court settlement with tax authorities, resolving allegations of approximately €1.5 million in unpaid tax and VAT. The couple, who denied the charges, were investigated for financial discrepancies dating back to 2016, involving 26 bank accounts across Malta and Europe, and significant property investments totaling around €12 million. The settlement was facilitated by recent legislative changes allowing individuals to regularize their tax positions through financial agreements, avoiding criminal prosecution for offenses including tax evasion, money laundering, and fraud, with penalties ranging from €10,000 to €1 million.
