Over 2,000 Excess Deaths in France During 'Historic' Heatwave 03.07.2026

French Minister of Health Stéphanie Rist announced that at least 2,025 more people died than usual during the heatwave from June 22 to 28. This figure is more than double the previous estimate of 1,000 excess deaths. People over the age of 45 were particularly affected. The number of deaths at home rose by 91 percent compared to the previous week, with loneliness playing a significant role. Older people do not always receive the necessary assistance, while indoor temperatures can rise significantly.
