'Own demons' killed man, not mum's smoothie, jury told 05.05.2026

The Brisbane Supreme Court is nearing the conclusion of a 19-day murder trial involving 59-year-old Maree Mavis Crabtree, who is accused of killing her 26-year-old son, Jonathan, on July 19, 2017. Prosecutors allege Crabtree administered a drug-laced smoothie to her son to secure a $125,000 insurance payout and resolve legal pressures. Conversely, defence barrister Angus Edwards argued that Jonathan’s death resulted from his own history of drug addiction, mental health struggles following a brain injury, or potential foul play by his sister, Tara. While the prosecution maintains that Tara’s testimony is reliable despite her intellectual limitations, the defence contends that Tara had personal motives to frame her mother. The jury must now weigh these conflicting narratives regarding the events at the family’s home.
