Pakistan calls troops, orders 3-day curfew as 24 killed in pro-Iran rallies 02.03.2026

Pakistan has deployed troops and imposed a three-day curfew in parts of the Gilgit-Baltistan region following widespread, violent protests that resulted in at least 24 deaths and dozens of injuries across the country on Sunday. The unrest was triggered by the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli attack on Saturday. In Gilgit, Skurdu, and Shigar, clashes between protesters and security forces led to 12 protester deaths and one security officer's death, prompting the curfew which began Monday and will last until Wednesday. Demonstrators also targeted UN offices, a police station, a school, and a local charity. In Karachi, 10 people died and over 60 were injured outside the US consulate, with two more deaths in Islamabad near the US embassy. Security has been heightened at US diplomatic missions nationwide, leading to the cancellation of visa appointments.
