‘Pam the Bird’ has become a divisive fixture on Melbourne landmarks – but is it art or vandalism? 07.07.2026

The "Pam the Bird" graffiti phenomenon has sparked intense debate in Melbourne regarding whether the works constitute art or vandalism. Jack Gibson-Burrell, 22, was recently arrested after allegedly scaling a 120-metre pylon on the Bolte Bridge to paint a large white bird. This incident follows a history of similar high-risk graffiti on landmarks like the Flinders Street clock tower and the Novotel South Wharf. Gibson-Burrell faces numerous charges, including burglary and criminal damage, with total damages estimated at over $700,000. While some view the illicit nature of the work as essential to its value, others criticize the danger posed by such stunts. The artist is currently on bail for over 200 offences and is scheduled to face trial in the county court following a significant police response to the Bolte Bridge incident.
