Parents of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy meet Georgian prime minister 03.06.2026

Parents of children diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in Georgia met with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze on March 17, 2024, to discuss access to vital medicines. The two-hour meeting, held at the government administration, focused on the importation and funding of four specific medications. Parents have been protesting for 44 days, demanding state funding for these treatments for approximately 100 diagnosed children in Georgia. While no concrete promises were made, the parents found the dialogue encouraging and expect future meetings to address more specific actions. The government acknowledged the need for further assessment of the drugs' regulation and availability. A public fundraising campaign has raised over 1.6 million lari for the children's daily needs and medical equipment, as the cost of the required medicines remains prohibitive.
