Paris dream turns to nightmare as rooftop dwellers bake in historic heatwave 25.06.2026

The unrelenting heatwave gripping France has turned the picturesque zinc roofs of Paris into a health hazard for those living directly beneath them. Amelie Kenney, a 23-year-old recent graduate, shares a cramped sixth-floor attic apartment with her partner, Francesca Pilia. Their west-facing window exposes them to direct sun from midday to dusk, making their home unbearable. “It’s just baking in the whole afternoon and it’s impossible to just get a respite,” Kenney said, as temperatures in Paris nudged past 40°C (104°F) during the day and 25°C (77°F) at night.
