Partnerschaft: Was Verliebte im Alter wirklich glücklich macht 22.02.2026

A study by psychologist Iris Wahring and her international team at the University of Vienna reveals that cohabitation, not marriage, significantly boosts life satisfaction for individuals over 50. Analyzing data from 2840 heterosexual participants aged 50-95 in the United States between 2006 and 2021, researchers found that moving in together, regardless of marital status, led to increased well-being and reduced depressive symptoms. The study, published in the "International Journal of Behavioral Development," indicates that the positive impact on well-being is derived from the shared life experience of partnership, with no additional measurable happiness gain from later marriage for those already cohabiting. Interestingly, relationship breakups in this age group did not result in a measurable decline in well-being, suggesting strong emotional resilience.
