Pashinyan claims victory amid electoral violations and loss of two-thirds majority 08.06.2026

Armenia held its 2026 parliamentary elections on June 7, with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party claiming victory despite record numbers of invalid ballots and accusations of electoral violations from opposition leaders. Turnout was 58.97%, with the highest participation in Syunik province and the lowest in Gegharkunik. Pashinyan declared victory early, citing internal party figures, and accused opponents of vote-buying. Opposition leaders Samvel Karapetyan and Arman Tatoyan denounced the premature declaration and alleged significant irregularities, including the potential improper voting of soldiers and discrepancies in vote counts reported by the Central Election Commission. While Civil Contract appears to retain a parliamentary majority, it has lost its two-thirds constitutional majority, impacting its ability to amend the constitution or appoint key officials independently.
