Paul Goldsmith seeks advice on protection of electoral systems from growing AI threat 04.07.2026

New Zealand's Justice Minister, Paul Goldsmith, is actively seeking advice from officials on strengthening the protection of the nation's electoral systems against the escalating threat posed by advanced artificial intelligence. This initiative follows a joint warning from the National Cyber Security Centre and Five Eyes partner agencies about the immediate and significant nature of this threat. Goldsmith affirmed that existing mechanisms are in place to identify and respond to election risks, emphasizing the need to ensure their continued effectiveness in the evolving threat landscape. While he cannot direct the Electoral Commission's operations, he expects agencies to proactively manage their stewardship responsibilities and adapt to new environmental changes, noting that the Electoral Commission is already considering frontier AI and its implications for system readiness.
