Payments in Tunisia: Checks collapse as transfers and bills of exchange take over 07.07.2026

According to the annual report from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) published this Tuesday, payment habits in Tunisia underwent a profound transformation in 2025. The use of checks experienced a historic collapse, with a 67.5% decrease in the number of transactions and a 58.8% decrease in value. This decline is explained by legislative reforms and the adoption of new instruments. Consequently, bank transfers have become the primary clearing channel, representing 60% of the total value at 79.8 billion dinars. At the same time, the use of bills of exchange (lettre de change) surged by 161% in volume. Digitalization is also progressing strongly, particularly through mobile payments, which increased by 80.5%. These developments reflect the success of the National Strategy for the Development of Digital Payments, which aims to strengthen financial inclusion and transaction security.
