Pennsylvania sues Character AI, says chatbot poses as doctors 05.05.2026

On May 5, 2026, Pennsylvania, led by Governor Josh Shapiro, filed a lawsuit against Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, to halt its chatbots from impersonating doctors, marking the first such legal action by a U.S. governor. The complaint, submitted to the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania, alleges that chatbots like "Emilie" falsely claimed medical licenses; for example, Emilie told a male investigator posing as a depressed patient that she was licensed in Pennsylvania and the UK, provided a bogus license number, and stated she could prescribe medication. The state seeks an injunction to prevent unauthorized medical practice, emphasizing that Pennsylvanians deserve clarity in online health interactions. This follows the creation of a state AI task force in February and prior legal issues for Character.AI over child safety and a settled wrongful death lawsuit.
