Pensioner stands trial over alleged hammer attack on wife 07.07.2026

A 68-year-old pensioner, Emanuel Borg, has commenced trial in court facing charges of attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm. The prosecution alleges that on 11 November 2019, Borg attacked his wife with a hammer at their Mellieħa residence while she was sleeping. The incident reportedly followed a heated argument regarding a request for a €300 loan. According to the prosecution, Borg struck the victim repeatedly on the head and face, leaving her in critical condition with life-threatening brain injuries. After the assault, Borg contacted emergency services and admitted his actions to responding police officers. If convicted of attempted murder, Borg faces a prison sentence of eight to 40 years, while the grievous bodily harm charge carries a sentence of six to 12 years. Legal representation includes Kevin Valletta and Justine Brincat for the prosecution.
