People in blue zones live longer than the rest of us. I spent a week trying to follow their longevity hacks. 02.06.2026

The author spent a week at a Blue Zones-inspired retreat in Hilton Head, South Carolina, to explore the lifestyle habits of populations known for their longevity. These "blue zones" include Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; and Loma Linda, Calif. The retreat focused on the "Power 9" principles: natural movement, a sense of purpose (ikigai), a mostly plant-based diet, downshifting, the 80% rule for eating, and strong social ties. The author found the experience challenging, particularly giving up sugar and alcohol, and noted that while the principles aren't groundbreaking, their integration into daily life is key. The program involved various classes, workshops, and meals designed to embody these longevity hacks, emphasizing consistent, low-level activity and mindful eating over intense routines.
