Perinatal mortality continues to rise in France 07.07.2026

Perinatal mortality in France saw a significant increase in 2024, reaching a rate of 11.2 per 1,000 births, according to a Drees study published on July 7. Out of a total of 661,822 births, 7,398 children died before their seventh day of life or were stillborn. Several risk factors influence these statistics, notably prematurity, which accounts for 84% of deaths, as well as maternal age. Socio-economic and geographical inequalities are also pronounced: the rate is higher in disadvantaged areas and in Overseas France, where it is 60% higher than in mainland France. This upward trend, observed since 2021, now places France at the bottom of the European Union rankings, contrasting with its position as a leader in the 1990s.
