Pescatun and the University consolidate relations 07.07.2026

The fishing company (Pescatun) and the University of Las Tunas (ULT) have strengthened their scientific cooperation through the thesis defense of agronomist Alexis Daniel Vega Torres. The research, tutored by Adalberto Ramiro Leyva Segura and Madelaine Meriño Lara, was conducted in the Buenaventura lagoon, in the Gulf of Guacanayabo. The study compared the growth of the oyster (*Cassostrea rizphorae*) using mother-of-pearl collectors and plastic hexagonal meshes. The results demonstrated that the use of *Crassostrea virginica* shells optimizes growth and meat mass, although both methods protect the mangrove ecosystem. Despite the economic blockade and fuel shortages hindering the construction of an oyster farm in Guayabal Bay, the project seeks to integrate into the Conpescas Guacanayabo program to promote sustainable production.
