Petrobangla loosens rules to attract spot LNG suppliers 08.09.2026

During a Jatiya Sangsad debate, State Minister for Energy Aninda Islam Amit outlined a three-phase plan to resolve the energy and electricity crisis, targeting relief by 2027, greater relief by 2028, and a crisis-free state by 2030. He attributed the current crisis to policy errors, corruption, and mismanagement under the previous Awami League government. Opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman proposed forming a permanent taskforce for coordinated action, suggesting it could restore public confidence by uniting the government and opposition. Jamaat MP Muhammad Nazibur Rahman criticized the government's leadership, proposing solutions like increasing domestic gas production, ensuring fuel reserves, and utilizing domestic coal. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed blamed the previous government's energy policy and the Middle East conflict for exacerbating the crisis, noting that no exploration had occurred under the previous administration. State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki claimed the previous government's energy policy favored specific individuals in LNG imports. Aninda reported that offshore gas exploration has begun, with 150 wells planned and 30 underway, expected to add 2,320 million cubic feet of gas by 2031. The Middle East crisis led to additional LNG spot market purchases costing Tk 15,350 crore.
