Phala Phala: Anatomy of a scandal 07.05.2026

The Constitutional Court is set to deliver its judgment on Friday, May 8, 2026, regarding an application by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to overturn Parliament's decision not to adopt the Section 89 report on the Phala Phala scandal. This report investigated allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa stemming from a February 2020 robbery at his Limpopo game farm, where an estimated $4 million was stolen from a couch. The scandal intensified in June 2022 when former spy boss Arthur Fraser laid charges, alleging Ramaphosa failed to report the robbery and that illicit payments were made to the suspects. Despite ongoing criminal and regulatory investigations, no criminal conviction has been secured against Ramaphosa, and he has consistently denied wrongdoing. The court's decision could determine whether Ramaphosa faces potential impeachment proceedings.
