Philippines probes possible new structure at disputed Scarborough Shoal 03.06.2026

The Philippines has launched an investigation into reports of a new structure at Scarborough Shoal, a strategically vital fishing ground in the South China Sea that has been effectively controlled by China since 2012. The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea stated it takes any development affecting the country's sovereign rights seriously. Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro acknowledged receiving preliminary information about the structure, noting it could be a temporary installation or debris. Maritime monitoring group Sealight shared images on June 2 showing a potential structure near the shoal's entrance. Despite a 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines, China maintains a constant presence of coast guard vessels in the area.
