Photos: Aid cuts, drought and conflict leave Somalis desperate 07.05.2026

In Somalia, consecutive seasons of failed rains, compounded by ongoing conflict and significant cuts in international aid, have created a desperate humanitarian crisis, particularly in the Jubbaland state. Maryam, a 46-year-old mother, fled her village with her children after drought decimated her livestock and al-Shabab fighters seized food supplies, seeking refuge in makeshift settlements near Kismayo. Over 300,000 Somalis have been displaced since January, facing severe malnutrition, which has doubled the nation's rate. International organizations, impacted by reduced funding, including US aid cuts, are struggling to operate, forcing the closure of health centers and schools. The UN's humanitarian program for Somalia has seen a drastic reduction, from $2.6 billion in 2023 to a target of $852 million this year, with only 13% raised so far, leading to difficult choices about resource allocation and life-saving interventions.
