“Physical education must be intensified, not reduced!” 07.07.2026

The planned “Entflechtung 27” (Decoupling 27) project proposes removing the mandatory school sports requirement from federal law, allowing cantons to decide for themselves the extent of compulsory physical education in the future. Currently, three lessons per week are prescribed nationwide in Switzerland. Critics and sports associations warn of massive setbacks for the health, social integration, and equal opportunities of young people. There are fears that cantons might reduce sports hours to save on infrastructure investments, given that 100 to 150 gymnasiums are already lacking. A petition against this change has already collected over 20,000 signatures. While a reader survey shows a clear majority in favor of maintaining the status quo, there are nuanced opinions regarding the relevance of sports in vocational schools compared to primary and secondary schools.
