PICS: Rare 23-metre fin whale washes ashore near Gansbaai 03.07.2026

A rare stranding of a female fin whale has occurred along the Greater Dyer Island coastline near Gansbaai, South Africa. The 23-metre whale was first spotted on Wednesday near Gansbaai Harbour by Jason Stafford of Ivanhoe Sea Safaris before washing ashore at Die Plaat. Teams from Marine Dynamics and the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) responded to assess the animal and document what is believed to be the first recorded fin whale stranding in the area.
