Pittsburgh Public Schools outline next steps of Future Ready Plan 03.06.2026

Pittsburgh Public Schools has initiated its "Future Ready Facilities Plan," involving the closure of seven schools by next month and two more by the following year, alongside grade reconfigurations and building transfers. Superintendent Wayne Walters stated this aims to retain families by creating a more consistent educational experience across clearer elementary, middle, and high school models, and by expanding access to specialized programs. The plan also intends to address aging infrastructure, with the nine affected schools averaging 90 years old, and potentially free up funds for necessary upgrades. Walters emphasized that these closures are not a complete budget solution and that the district will pursue further efficiencies, grants, and fairer state funding, while also committing to ongoing community engagement for parental input on the transition.
