Planning Authority orders removal of illegal structure at St Thomas Bay car park 07.07.2026

The Planning Authority's Compliance and Enforcement Directorate intervened at the Il-Fajtata parking area in Marsaskala to address an illegal structure. Officials provided the responsible owner with a 24-hour window to voluntarily remove the structure, a request the owner complied with promptly. This enforcement action occurs amidst a broader dispute regarding the ownership and usage of the land. While a private operator claims leasehold rights and has attempted to charge motorists, the Marsaskala Council maintains the area must remain a free public car park. Following a meeting on 24 June 2026, the Council removed certain signs after receiving claims of private ownership. Meanwhile, Minister Chris Bonett noted that an expropriation process began last year to ensure the site remains accessible to the public, despite ongoing tensions regarding land rights and recent infrastructure upgrades.
