Police arrest man over Morgan McSweeney phone theft 07.05.2026

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods in connection with the theft of a government phone belonging to Morgan McSweeney, former chief of staff to Sir Keir Starmer. The phone was stolen on October 20 last year in Belgrave Road, Pimlico. The arrested man, who was taken into custody last Wednesday and subsequently bailed, is suspected of receiving the phone after its theft and attempting to sell it. He is not believed to be involved in the original theft, and the phone has not been recovered. This incident gained public attention amid concerns over potential loss of sensitive exchanges, particularly regarding Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador. McSweeney testified before the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the circumstances of the theft, which he described as a street robbery.
